Buddhist Chant-along

Jet lag made me wake up early this morning, so I surfed channels to pass time.

And then I happened on to this:

Buddhist chants, Karaoke style! It was on the GREAT LOVE channel.
No, not your great love for your mistress or your dog, but the great love Buddhists refers to detachment and unselfish interest in others' welfare.
Buddhists thinks that all life is suffering, and detachment of oneself from umm.. themself is crucial for enlightenment. So this great love thing is a big part of that, I gathered.

Anyway, this week there are celebrations of the Buddha's birth in Hong Kong, so there are lots of banners and posters about that.

And on the same day they have the famous bun fights (not Buddhist) on one of the outer islands.

Anyway, I never had much exposure to buddhist philosophy, my mom is very well read on the subject, I'll probably bug her about it. I'll probably be laughed at for asking about how to attend enlightenment in 5 minutes. "Are we enlightened yet? No. Are we enlightened yet? No!"

But just like they have Catholic schools, in HK they have lots of Buddhist schools. I just find it funny that kids are chanting buddhist texts for exams. "This year I rate you 53% for enlightenment, 74% for understanding of dharma. - But I have been detaching myself from the worldly concept of homework! Mom is so going to kick my ass for failing enlightenment"
